1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Convertible 4-Speed
This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR is one of 518 convertibles produced for the model year and was completed on July 15, 1968. It was first delivered to Swendson Ford in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was restored by a previous owner, and was acquired by the selling dealer in 2025. It is powered by a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential and is finished in Wimbledon White over black vinyl. Equipment includes the Interior Décor, Visibility, and GT Equipment groups, along with a power-operated white soft top, a roll bar, functional hood scoops, a rear spoiler, power front disc brakes, power steering, and 10-spoke 15″ aluminum wheels. This GT500KR is now offered by the selling dealer with an Elite Marti Report, spare parts, and a transferable New York registration.
The GT500KR was added to the Shelby American lineup mid-way through the 1968 model year and shared its styling with the GT500 but was fitted with a higher-powered 428ci Cobra Jet engine. Exterior design elements include an SMC fiberglass hood with a functional ram-air scoop, grille-mounted Lucas lights, a rear spoiler, sequential taillights, and air scoops on the quarter panels.
This example was ordered in Wimbledon White (M), and it was repainted red in the 1980s before it was restored to its original shade around 2009. Exterior equipment includes a power-operated white soft top, fog lights, and quad exhaust outlets.
Aluminum 10-spoke 15″ wheels are mounted with E70-15 Goodyear Speedway tires. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. The car is equipped with power steering, and stopping is provided by power-assisted front disc brakes.
The front bucket seats are trimmed in black vinyl, and a roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts was standard in Shelby cars. The Visibility Group included under-dash courtesy lights and illumination in the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment. A retro-look radio has been installed, and there is an Apple-compatible audio cable in the glovebox. A removed Philco AM radio and floor mats are included as displayed in the gallery.
The woodgrain tilt-away steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. A Stewart-Warner ammeter and oil pressure gauge are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows under 58k miles.
The 428ci V8 was factory equipped with a four-barrel Holley carburetor and was rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok limited-slip differential.
The Elite Marti report lists factory colors and equipment along with production statistics.
The car is sold with its transferable New York registration, which serves as the ownership document in the state.
