Bugatti Type 35B Re-Creation by Pur Sang
This Bugatti Type 35B re-creation was hand built by Pur Sang in Argentina in late 2022 before final assembly was carried out in California. Purchased by the selling dealer approximately three years ago, the car is powered by a supercharged 2.3-liter inline-eight that features a single overhead camshaft, three valves per cylinder, and a single updraft carburetor. Additional features include a four-speed manual transmission with straight-cut gears, hand-formed body panels finished in Lyonnaise Blue, cable-actuated four-wheel drum brakes, 19” cast-aluminum wheels with detachable rims, a forged hollow front axle, Walnut leather upholstery, and an engine-turned dashboard. Elements modified from the original Type 35’s design include a plain-bearing crankshaft, an updated firing order, a multi-plate dry clutch, distributor ignition, an electric fuel pump, and an electric cooling fan. This Pur Sang Type 35B is now offered in North Salem, New York, with a build sheet, Pur Sang literature, photos from its construction, and a clean Montana title describing the car as a 1927 Bugatti.

Ettore Bugatti’s Type 35 race cars amassed victories in a variety of events between 1924 and 1930, including at numerous Grand Prix races and five consecutive editions of the Targa Florio. Argentina-based Pur Sang was founded in the 1980s as a provider of service and parts for original Bugattis before parlaying its tooling and skillset into the production of re-creations.

Finished in pale blue, the hand-formed aluminum panels replicate the Type 35’s bodywork and feature a boat tail and a louvered centrally hinged hood. Road-racing equipment includes removable cycle fenders, Marchal-style headlights, and Scintilla-style taillights, while additional details include a horseshoe-shaped honeycomb radiator, leather hood straps, a driver-side windscreen, an external fuel filler with a two-eared cap, and external safety wiring. The majority of the selling dealer’s photos were taken in 2023.

Center-lock cast aluminum wheels feature detachable rims and are wrapped in Blockley tires measuring 5.00-19H, as is a matching spare that is secured to the side of the cowl via leather straps. Stopping is handled by 300mm-diameter drums and a series of cables and levers designed to balance pressure. A pedal actuates all four brakes, while a lever mounted outside the cabin deploys the rear brakes alone.

The cockpit houses a two-place bench upholstered in Walnut leather with matching trim over the perimeter ingress points and on each side of the exposed transmission housing. Features include exposed aluminum interior panels, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a right-hand shifter with the shift handle positioned outside the cabin, and a hand-operated fuel pump.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel is situated at the right-hand side of the machine-turned dash panel, which houses an 8k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel tank pressure and oil pressure. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and according to the selling dealer, approximately 50 miles have been added under current ownership.

The 2.3-liter inline-eight was built using components fabricated in-house by Pur Sang and features a two-piece crankcase, two blocks of four cylinders each, and a detachable cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft operating three valves per cylinder. The Roots-type supercharger features two three-lobe rotors and is fed by a single updraft carburetor. A plain-bearing crankshaft is utilized in lieu of the original Type 35’s rolling-bearing setup and the firing order has been modified from the order originally used by Bugatti. Additional updated equipment includes a distributor in place of a magneto, an electric cooling fan positioned behind the radiator, an electric fuel pump, a sealed water-pump bearing, a concealed modern oil filter, an alternator driven via a cardan shaft, and a battery. Four-into-one exhaust headers lead to dual exhaust outlets. The distributor is said to have been serviced with a replacement cap and points under current ownership.

The four-speed manual transmission retains the straight-cut gear design of the original Type 35 model’s gearbox, and power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a bevel-gear rear end. A multi-plate dry clutch is used in place of the original wet-clutch technology.

Suspension incorporates a forged hollow front axle through which semi-elliptical leaf springs pass and a solid rear axle with inverted quarter-elliptical springs. Friction shock absorbers are utilized at each corner. Steering is handled via worm and helical gear.

Images from the car’s construction are viewable in the photo gallery below, as can a build sheet listing the car’s specifications and options.

Number 673PS is stamped on the right-front dumb iron and is listed as the identification number on the Montana title, which describes the car as a 1927 Bugatti Type 35B.
